The Bedford Genealogical Society, Inc. was formed by a group of individuals wishing to preserve family histories of the people who have lived in this county and surrounding areas. The goal of the society is to promote, preserve, and exchange genealogical and historical data. To this goal, the members work to provide this information to the general public by maintaining this web-site, publishing a Quarterly newsletter, providing classes in genealogy research, organizing and hosting the annual Bedford Genealogy Fair and meeting 9 times a year with programs of interest to the genealogical community.
Quarterly: The Society publishes a 16-page Quarterly four times a year - in February, May, August and November. This Quarterly is sent to all members free-of-charge. The publication covers a wide range of topics, including military & historic articles, old articles from the Bedford Bulletin/Democrat, and memoirs of county residents. The Quarterly also provides computer and Internet technology tutorials relative to genealogy and posts notices to genealogical happenings within the state. The Quarterly also accepts queries.
Genealogy Classes: Another project of the Society is a course offered in basic genealogical research. This four-session Saturday class is open to members and the general public alike. The course is offered in late winter - usually in February, March or April. The exact dates will be published at this site.
Bedford Genealogy Fair: The fair is held on the second Saturday of September in Bedford, Virginia. The event includes speakers on varied subjects of genealogical interest and displays involving 40 tables. The tables are rented by local and nearby vendors, societies, libraries, and individuals researching family surnames. The event is open free to the public.
Meetings: The Society conducts meeting in Bedford 9 times a year on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 1:30 PM at the Bedford Public Library. Announcement of topics appears elsewhere at this web-site.
Our members reside not only in Bedford County but throughout the entire state of Virginia, and other states, some as far away as California, Oregon, and Washington.
This Society is a joint effort. Both the organization and its members work together to promote the gathering and sharing of genealogical information. If you feel you can benefit from or be a benefit to the Bedford Genealogical Society, Inc., we invite you to JOIN US.
