For the US Bicentennial, the chapter published “Echoes of Olde Liberty,” an 82-page book about the town of Bedford, Virginia (at one time known as Liberty).  This book is full of photographs and information about the businesses, churches, houses, events, and organizations in Bedford from an earlier time.

The Peaks of Otter DAR Chapter wrote a set of books concerning the communities of Bedford County, Virginia. The goal was to write about the families, businesses, churches and schools in communities that were large enough to be recognized by the U.S. Post Office. This effort produced the Bedford Villages Lost and Found series in three volumes.

“The Saunsaunders familiesders Families around the Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia”

(Dr. Stevens lives in Bedford County where he is pastor of a local church.)

This 317 page book covers the histories of four Saunders families, two of whom settled in the areas of Bedford and Franklin counties that now encompass Smith Mountain Lake.  The families are:  (1) William Sanders [sp] and Mary Unknown from Albemarle County.  Their son, Julius Saunders m Jemina Woodward and their children, Julius Saunders, Jr., George Saunders and Pleasant Saunders settled in the lake area;  (2) Thomas Saunders and Elizabeth Unknown from Hanover County.  They eventually relocated to Bedford County.  Their children were Col. David Saunders, Susannah, Lucy, Julius, James and Elizabeth;  (3) Henry Saunders and Elizabeth Unknown from Pennsylvania.  Their son, William David Saunders settled in Pittsylvania County, and his son, Daniel Green Saunders eventually moved to Bedford County; and (4) John Saunders and Mary Risle and Sarah Hargreave.  A great grandson, Col. Peter Hyde Saunders, eventually settled in Franklin County.  This book is well indexed.  

The book sells for $35.00 with an additional $5.00 for S & H.
